So today (December 4th, 2016) I visited the old salt mine in Prahova County. As you approach the mine, it does not look like anything special. You could easily drive past and not realise. Once you have your ticket, you board a minibus which takes you to the entrance to the mine. Rather than a lift dropping deep into the Earth, you drive down a tunnel that is constantly going down. After around ten minutes you find yourself in a little cavern where the van is parked. So far, the tunnels and caverns are kind of interesting, but once you walk through the door into the main cavern your breath is taken away. It reminded me of the Mines of Moria from Lord of the Rings.
The cavern ceiling is easily a hundred meters above you. The air is crisp and pure. The walls are smooth as marble with patterns in the surface. The lighting is subdued but none of the detail is hidden. There are basketball nets set up, as well as ping pong tables and pool tables. There are pools of salt water so clear that I was stood over one, and I actually mistook the reflection on the water surface for a deep chasm. It was stunning.
The mine, as well as being a tourist attraction, serves a medical purpose. The air helps with breathing and to relieve congestion. There are numerous beds and chairs set up so that those with breathing difficulties can come and spend time in the mines. It sounds strange, but I have to say that my chest felt clearer after spending time there. I'm so glad I took the time to visit this place.
