At what point does compromise become capitulation? For a happy life, in which you interact with others, compromise is necessary. It's not always nice and quite often can bruise the ego, but sometimes it's for a greater good. The greater good can be peace between nations, or a peaceful night between people.
The thing about compromising is that it can become capitulation by degrees. Compromising does not mean that two people meet halfway. Sometimes one person has to give up their position completely. Sometimes a nation will surrender in war to save the people of that nation. Sometimes a husband will agree to do something they do not like to make their wife happy.
I think the phrase, "give someone an inch, and they'll take a mile" sums up what I'm thinking. Compromising with others is essential. Compromising oneself is not.
